Worried About Mold? Get Inspected

Mold removal in prescott by ServiceMaster of Prescott
One of the wonderful things about living in Prescott is the grand amount of historic and charming older homes that we have in the area.  However, sometimes these come with hidden issues. Have you noticed a new odd or musty smell in your home or office lately?  Or maybe you have seen some dark or black spots showing up in cracks or crevices of your tile or walls.  It may be time to think about scheduling a mold inspection.

Mold can go a lot deeper than the surface of your paint.  That is probably just the beginning.  ServiceMaster of Prescott brings you a few good things to know when it comes to your mold inspection:
  • Mold inspections need to be performed by a qualified mold inspector, one with formal training and experience.
  • Your mold inspector should look for evidence of past or current mold growth.  This may mean looking deeper into the walls and floors of your home as mold growth, past or present may indicate a water problem which will come back when certain conditions return such as a recurring leak.
  • Some mold growth in buildings may be perfectly normal. For example, Ceratosystis and Ophiostoma are two molds that grow on lumber. These molds grow on the sap of wood and stop growing once the wood has dried.
  • The mold inspector looks for sources of moisture. Without water or moisture you will not have a mold problem.
  • Mold inspections are a subset of investigations called "Indoor Air Quality" (IAQ) investigations.  The question is "What irritants are present in the air causing discomfort to the occupants?" If you are having a mold inspection because you feel ill when you are in a certain building or room, it could be other irritants that may be causing the discomfort; these tests should be included in the investigation.
Some of the common signs of mold may be present already and you just don’t know it.  Here are some things to look for and reason you may need an inspection.
  • Itchy eyes, sneezing, runny nose when you walk into a room or building.
  • You can verify that a past water problem is no longer an issue.
  • To confirm that there is not an existing moisture or mold problem associated with a new building or home that you plan to rent or purchase.
If these are some things that you may be worried about, or if you need to make an appointment for a mold inspection, contact ServiceMaster Prescott today 928-445-9205 or visit: http://www.servicemasterofprescott.com

Hidden Water Damage Information from ServiceMaster of Prescott

water damage in Prescott - Water Restoration by ServiceMaster Prescott
Prescott Arizona has a lot to offer, including wonderful seasons that come with some hidden costs. One of these costs can include water damage. Once given a chance due to a freeze, extreme heat or an old broken pipe, water flows anywhere it wants to. This includes the walls and floors of your house. Once it’s loose inside your house, it’s important to be aware of signs of water damage in hidden places.

ServiceMaster of Prescott brings you these signs of water damage to be aware of:

Distasteful odors. Hidden residual water stagnates and fosters mold and bacterial growth. This will produces a musty, earthy smell that’s a red flag indicating undetected water damage.

Visual signs of mold growth. Airborne mold spores are microscopic and find their way into hidden nooks and crannies in the structure of the home. So does water. When moisture contacts dormant spores, active mold growth begins. If you notice fuzzy discolorations in out-of-the-way spaces, have them evaluated by a ServiceMaster of Prescott technician.

Seeping Stains on walls and ceilings. Water that seeps into wall voids and the space between levels often manifests as a stain or blotch as it slowly saturates the adjacent wall board or ceiling.

Flaking paint. Another symptom of loose water inside wall spaces is peeling paint on the exterior of the wall.  Drywall saturates and causes paint to lose adhesion.

Drooping walls and ceilings. Saturated drywall or ceiling materials become very heavy with the added water weight. Eventually, they begin to deform and buckle. Water-soaked walls and ceilings present a safety hazard if they collapse.

Damaged Floors. Water always seeks the lowest level and seeps under floor coverings like carpet, tile, and vinyl, soaking into the sub floor. Removal of some floor coverings, particularly carpet and padding, may be necessary to effectively dry the area.

For a free visual inspection of water damage or mold growth, contact ServiceMaster of Prescott at (928) 445-9205 and (928) 634-5402 or visit us online at http://www.servicematerprescott.com for more information on water damage you may have.

It's that time of the year, the Monsoons will be delivering rains once again! Water Damage Prevention from ServiceMaster of Prescott

monsoon water damage cleanup by ServiceMaster of Prescott
Arizona receives up to half of their annual rainfall during the summer monsoon bring with it many flashes of lightning and fanfare looking forward to it.

The monsoon season suppresses much of the hot summer temperatures, replenishes water resources, and nourishes the vegetation. With its trademark thunderstorms and flooded streets in southwestern cities, monsoon rainfall events tend to be short and spotty, with intense, local storms drenching some neighborhoods but not others.

The water the storms bring quickly flows off the landscape into streets and rivers, with much of the remnant moisture evaporating in the summer sun, however sometimes the water finds its way into our homes and businesses. ServiceMaster of Prescott would like to take a moment to remind you of things to check before the monsoon water damage is in full swing.

1. Fix leaks immediately. Leaky roofs and foundation cracks allow water to get into your home, which can weaken the structure and provide a perfect habitat for mold. When you see wet spots on the ceiling or cracks in the foundation, fix them as soon as it’s safe to get up on the roof or the material is dry enough to repair. Check that roofing shingles are secure.

2. Close foundation cracks with mortar and masonry caulk or hydraulic cement, which expands and fills gaps completely and costs only a few dollars. Don’t patch solely with mortar or cement, which may crack again. If water is a recurring problem, be sure to investigate other solutions for issues like wet basements.

3. Clear gutters and drains. Keep gutters and drainage systems clear to carry water away from your home. Check storm drains on your street, as leaves and debris can block them, causing water to collect.

4. Prevent sewer backup. Install (or have a plumber install) sewer or septic line check valves, which allow waste to flow only one way. Plan to spend $100 or more per valve to have a pro install them, or do it yourself for $10-$15 each to ensure sewage can’t back up into the standing water in your home. Install at a point in the pipe that’s easy to access for repair.

5. Install French drains if you live on a slope and have a persistently wet basement or soggy lawn. A French drain collects water in your yard and diverts it safely away from your house.

Monsoon floods are a common challenge that many home owners will face at one time or another. However, by keeping your home in good repair and creating good drainage around your home, you can stop or reduce potential flood damage.

If you find that your home has suffered from any type of water damage, don’t wait! Call ServiceMaster of Prescott, the AZ monsoon specialists. We can cleanup the damage and reduce the chances of additional water damage. Open 24/7 365 days a year serving all of Yavapai county, Call ServiceMaster at (928) 445-9205 or (928) 634-5402 or visit us online at http://www.servicemasterprescott.com.

Improve the Health in Your Home - Tile cleaning by ServiceMaster of Prescott

Tile Cleaning - ServiceMaster of Prescott
One of the nicest touches to the basic architectural components of a home is ceramic or stone tile in kitchens, bathrooms, entryways and even outdoors. It’s hard to go wrong with tile. It’s durable, long-wearing, and looks great. A stone tile floor in the entryway immediately adds an air of class in a home, and there’s nothing quite like a stone patio in the backyard to host a barbecue for family and friends.

Unfortunately, tile and stone are not immune to the unhealthy elements that are in and around your home. Over time, dirt and grime build up in the porous surfaces of your stone, tile and grout flooring, turning them into a breeding ground for disease-causing bacteria. Especially in areas like the bathroom and kitchen, where germs can run rampant, it’s important to do everything you can to cut down on the spread of bacteria. While regular sweeping and mopping are helpful at keeping excessive build-up at bay, those don’t deliver the deep cleaning that your floors really need.

Some people try to take matters into their own hands and scrub between the tiles with a toothbrush to get at that gunky build-up that mops and brooms can’t reach. Unfortunately, that’s a lot easier said than done. After potentially hours of scrubbing, you often have nothing substantial to show for it but several aching joints and a filthy toothbrush. So what’s going to save your back and deliver a deep, safe, healthy cleaning?
The answer: professional stone, tile and grout cleaning from ServiceMaster in Prescott. We are known for our carpet cleaning services but we offer more than that including:

  • Tile and grout cleaning
  • Mold inspection
  • Mold removal
  • Water damage restoration
  • Fire damage cleanup
  • Bio Hazardous waste cleanup
  • Hoarding clean up

Professional cleaning is important, not only because it protects and preserves your investment in the premium building materials in your home; it also helps maintain the health of your home. Homes are supposed to be a safe haven that protect us from exposure to unhealthy elements like allergens, germs and pollutants. However, a buildup of bacteria, dust and pet dander on flooring surfaces can contribute to all kinds of chronic illnesses including allergies and asthma.

One worry that many homeowners have when having their homes cleaned is whether the products and process that the cleaner uses is even more unhealthy than what they are removing. That is not an issue with ServiceMaster of Prescott. All of the ingredients in our primary cleaner are safe and approved for your home and family, so you can know that your family is being well taken care of.

Our stone, tile and grout cleaning and sealing services penetrate deep inside the porous surfaces to remove the bacteria that can spread germs, eliminate grime and seal out dirt. And the result? You’re able to restore the appearance of your floors, while also extending the life of your stone and tile surfaces.

We service a Variety of stone and tile surfaces. Contact us today to find out if we can help you! Let ServiceMaster of Prescott do the hard work for you. Call 445-9205 or visit our website http://www.ServiceMasterPrescott.com

It might be time to have your home inspected for mold if...

Mold inspections by ServiceMaster of PrescottIf you are having a problem with allergies then there's a good chance there could be mold growing somewhere in your home. Common allergic reactions to mold include sneezing, sore eyes and a runny nose or nasal congestion. These tips are brought to you by ServiceMaster of Prescott, AZ

Do you notice your allergic reactions are worse when you're at home but you feel better when you go out? If so then it's especially likely you could have mold. It may be time to call a professional to do a mold inspection

Seeing Signs of Mold Growth
Visible mold growth might seem like an obvious sign of mold. However many people don't notice small amounts of mold growth or they think it's just soot or dirt. If you can see mold growth, even if it's only small, you should take action immediately. Small mold patches can spread and the fact that there is any mold shows that the conditions in your home are right for mold to grow. Visible mold growth could also be a sign that there is a much larger mold colony growing hidden. Some mold growth looks white and thread-like. Other mold appears as clusters of small black spots. Mold can be black, gray-brown, gray-green or white in color. Mold growing behind wallpaper made of vinyl can even appear orange, pink or purple.

Water Leaks
Water problems in homes are usually created by leaks. However if you already know that you have had a water leak (such as leaking pipes or a leaking ceiling) then just that knowledge by itself, even if you don't see signs of water damage, is a good sign that you might have mold growing in your house around the area where the leak was. Mold growth from leaks can often be hidden. If the leak was behind a wall or other surface then any mold will probably be hidden behind the surface too. Even if the leak was not behind a surface there could still be mold hidden out of view behind a wall or other surface from water which seeped through.

Condensation

If you see a lot of condensation in your home then it's a sign that you have a high amount of moisture, this can cause a mold problem. Condensation will occur on surfaces such as glass windows or metal pipes. Mold could be growing where the condensation builds up and collects. Rusting indoor pipes are a sign that you could have a lot of condensation in your house.

Toxic Symptoms from Mold
If you suffer neurological symptoms such as headaches, trouble concentrating, shortened attention span, memory loss and dizziness it could be a sign that there is toxic mold growing in your house which is poisoning your, if toxic symptoms increase when you are in your home or in a certain building then it's very likely that mold is growing there.

If your are experiencing these symptoms Call ServiceMaster of Prescott! We are happy to come to you home and do a FREE mold inspection. We will also advise you on how to get rid of your mold issues safely and efficiently. Don’t wait call us today! 928-445-9205 or visit our website http://www.ServiceMasterPrescott.com

Mold and mildew (mold in its early stage) are fungi that happily and quickly grow anywhere there is

Infants, children, pregnant women, elderly individuals, and people with existing respiratory conditions are at a higher risk for these problems. You can prevent mold by following these tips brought to you by ServiceMaster of Prescott.

•Spread towels out after use so that they dry more quickly.
•Minimize containers left in the shower for cleaning ease and better circulation.
•Wipe down the shower with a clean towel or squeegee after its last daily use.
•Choose shower curtains that dry and clean easily to help avoid soap residue.

Have a terrible odor in your home? Ozone treatment can remove it! ServiceMaster of Prescott

Ozone treatment in Prescott
Do you have a terrible smell in your home that you just can’t get rid of? ServiceMaster of Prescott has the solution: ozone treatment.

What is ozone? It is a form of oxygen with three oxygen molecules instead of the usual two. Ozone is formed when ultraviolet light interacts with oxygen and can last for around 20 minutes before reverting back to oxygen. The reason ozone treatment works so well for odor removal is because the third atom is loose, causing a reaction to the odor, thus eliminating it. Depending on how the area will be cleaned,  Hydroxyl can be used together with the ozone to make the process more effective.

There is something you should take in to consideration when looking at ozone products: There are quite a few over the counter products that claim they can replicate the process of professional ozone cleaning generators in bottled solutions but this is further from the truth. The process cannot be replicated in a small spray because it is a process that needs to be made with an ozone generator.

Consumer ozone generators are not as effective as commercial generators and are very expensive, and it takes more than just purchasing a generator for the treatment to be effective. Important safety protocols must be made, regarding the chemicals and the rate of decay that is used. Incorrect treatment can damage and even make the treated area smell even worse. That is why it is important to hire a trained professional with the correct equipment to remove the odors.

For more information about odor removal and ozone treatment, or immediate assistance and clean up in the Prescott area, call ServiceMaster of Prescott at (928) 445-9205 or (928) 634-5402. Visit our website at http://www.servicemasterofprescott.com/

The Dangers of Hoarding, ServiceMaster of Prescott

hoarding can be hazardious cleaning bio hazard removal
Hoarding is a condition in which a person compulsively collects a large amount of items that have little value. Hoarding can lead to hazards such as fire and mold as well at the possibility of getting toppled over by collapsing debris. ServiceMaster of Prescott would like to share the dangers of hoarding and why it is important to restore the building from such a mess.

Fire

One of the most dangerous hazards that comes with hoarding is fire. Large amounts of paper, books, discarded packaging, and improperly stored combustibles are a recipe for disaster. All it takes is an electrical discharge from a space heater or another outlet to start a home blazing, all the extra paper would fuel the fire, making it worse!

Integrity loss

The weight and clutter of hoarded items can actually put stress on the floor. Items stack against the floor and walls can cause walls to collapse

Collapsing debris

It is common for hoarders to create pathways between their collection of debris. If these mounds of items collapse, it could very easily trap a person underneath.  This could cause death by suffocation due the inability for the person to call for help.

Bio-hazards

In nearly every hoarding situation, bio-hazards are present. They can be very toxic and deadly and can lead to a wide range health issues. Common hazardous materials include dead animals and spoiled food.

ServiceMaster of Prescott are experts at cleaning up homes affected by hoarding or bio-hazard situations. We can clean it up quickly and professionally. ServiceMaster Restore Uncovers The Truth About Mold, ServiceMaster in Prescott

Mold removal in prescott
Just the thought of living in a home with mold is enough to strike fear in the minds of most homeowners. Given the health risks and property damage that mold can cause, the experts at ServiceMaster of Prescott say it is important for homeowners to know how to identify mold on their property, learn where it thrives and understand the best ways to eliminate it from their homes.

A recent survey, in which more than 250 trained and experienced franchise owners shared their expertise about this dangerous and costly issue that affects homes and businesses across the country.

"Mold isn't something most people think about until they experience it in their own home," says Peter Duncanson, director of system development at ServiceMaster ."It's important to beat mold at its own game -- this means taking steps to prevent mold from growing or calling in an expert right away to stop mold in its tracks once it begins to grow in your home."

According to the survey, many people believe they can kill mold on their own using powerful over-the-counter cleaners such as bleach; however, Duncanson says this is not true.

"Many retail products will change how mold looks, and you might think it's gone because you don't see it," Duncanson says. "But, the only way to get rid of mold completely and safely -- and to be sure you're protecting your property and health from additional risk -- is to have trained professionals physically remove it from the affected area."

According to the EPA1, potential health effects associated with mold include allergic reactions, asthma and other respiratory complaints, as well as irritation to the eyes, skin, nose, throat and lungs. By living with mold, homeowners are exposed to these potential health risks. Here are some information you should consider if you have mold in your building:
  • The best defenses against mold are to take away its food source, ensure adequate airflow and reduce moisture in the air.
  • Don't rely on retail products, such as bleaches that promise to kill mold, especially on porous surfaces.
  • Vacuum vents every month to remove dust, a primary food source for mold. If you have central heating and air, remember to clean the baseboards, floorboards and bathroom vents, as well.
  • If mold is visible, don't use a consumer vacuum to remove it. This includes wet/dry vacuums, which can actually make a mold issue even worse.
  • If you see mold in an area, do not use a fan to dry things out. Call a professional, as you will likely spread mold spores and create the potential for even more damage.
  • To reduce moisture and control ventilation in the bathroom, run an exhaust fan during a shower or open the door and windows in the bathroom after using it.
  • Consider investing in small household de-humidifiers to reduce moisture. If you have a large home or business, you may need more than one.
  • If you have terrariums and plants, be aware that these can be food sources for mold.
  • Don't ignore the problem. Signs of mold could indicate the presence of larger issues that may cause health risks.
If you suspect mold, call a trained professional, like those from ServiceMaster Restore, with the expertise and resources to restore your home to normal and prevent costlier damage.

The three most common causes of workplace allergies, ServiceMaster of Prescott

Workplace allergies mold removal
Springtime is here again and so are the allergies! While most allergies come from the outside, there are a few inside the office that could cause allergy symptoms. ServiceMaster of Prescott would like to share a couple causes of allergies and what you can do to solve them.

1. Fragrances
While you might find your perfume or cologne pleasing, it might have the opposite effect on your co-workers. In fact 30 percent of the population has an allergic reaction to perfumes and colones. The reaction could be worse if the sufferer is exposed to the fragrance for long periods of time. Be kind to your co-workers and resist the urge to wear a strong perfume.

2. Dust

No matter how closed up you have your office, as long as you have people in a building, dust will be in inside. Dust consists of dirt, dead insect parts, pollen, and plenty of dust mites. Believe it of not, a lot of dust is made by humans regularly shedding their skin and hair. Regular cleaning of the offices is required to keep dust at bay.

3. Mold

  2. Run the water and flush any toilets.
  3. Empty the water tank. An easy way to do this is to run hot water out of a bathroom faucet until it becomes cold.
  4. Turn back on any appliances like the refrigerator to ensure that they will be ready for you in time.
  5. Check your house for any leaks or any other type of damage that might have occurred while you where gone.  It is also very important to inspect your home to see if any creatures like mice have moved in while you where away.

When you return to your home, make sure to let all your neighbors know that you are back. Should you hire a carpet cleaning professional in Prescott to clean your carpet in the summer? ServiceMaster of Prescott

Carpet Cleaning in Prescott tile grout upholsterySummer is coming and it is one of the busiest times of the year, have you considered hiring a carpet cleaning professional? ServiceMaster of Prescott would like to share with you why having your carpet professionally cleaned this summer can benefit your home and family.

Your family brings what is outside, into your home.

People spend a lot of time outside during the summer. Family picnics, hiking, biking, walking the pets, and other outdoor activities are performed on a regular basis. All that dirt and gunk on your family's shoes will eventually make it to your home. It can get even worse when a heavy storm roles on in. You will find that your carpet is now covered by footprints, thanks to your family pet or that forgetful family member who forgot to take off their shoes. It can leave quite a mess and as the summer days progress, the dirt will build up and dig deeper into your carpet.

Allergens will find their way inside your home.

With everything in bloom, allergies are at their strongest in the summer months. These allergens and pollen make it through your windows and doors, settling into your carpet, only to have them spring back into the air when distributed by the vacuuming of the carpet. If you do not have your carpet cleaned at least once every summer, your allergies can become just as bad inside the home as it is outside.

You might be wondering “If I vacuum on a regular basis, that should be good enough, right?” While vacuuming can be effective at removing the dirt on the surface, dirt and allergens will eventually get deep into the root of the fibers in your carpet. Only a professional cleaning machine and special cleaning agents are able to penetrate deep enough into the carpet to remove the dirt. This equipment can be expensive to buy or rent and then there is the chance that you can damage your carpet by cleaning it incorrectly.

Keep your home clean this summer by calling the experts at ServiceMaster of Prescott Call 928-445-9205 or visit us online at http://www.servicemasterofprescott.com/

Carpet cleaning in Prescott: Should you have a professional steam clean your carpet or can you do it yourself?

If you live in Prescott, Sedona, Cottonwood or Prescott Valley -- or anywhere in Yavapai County -- hire a professional cleaning service for your next carpet cleaning, Upholstery Cleaning and Tile Cleaing; call ServiceMaster of Prescott , we provide amazing carpet care and stain removal.
Carpet cleaning can be quite a chore at times and not very fun to do... BUT to keep your carpets lasting for a long time it is important to clean them annually. One of the most effective ways to clean your carpet is steam cleaning. You might think steam cleaning is a task you could do by yourself. ServiceMaster would like to share some reasons why it might be more practical to have a professional clean your carpet in the long run.

Professionals have powerful machines not available to the public

While you could rent a steam machine from your local grocery store, or buy one of the many domestic cleaning available, it will not have the power that a commercial steam system and should be limited to common spills and accidents. Professionals will have both a industrial strength truck-mounted unit and/or a portable one. Allowing them to clean any home at max efficiency.

The Risks of doing it yourself.

Domestic machines do not have the ability to heat the water to the same high temperatures that professional machines can. This would result in less effective cleaning and would extract less dirt because of it. If done correctly, a carpet should only be slightly damp. If a carpet is still soggy after a cleaning, this would make your carpet a breeding ground for mold and needs to be dried as soon as possible. A wet carpet means indicates that the machine was not powerful enough to clean the carpet properly.

Other factors that fit into the equation is what chemicals used will also dictate how well the carpet is cleaned. In the long run, you might waste money trying to clean it yourself and then in the end have to hire a professional to clean it a second time

Let the professionals at ServiceMaster clean your carpet! Call us at (928) 445-9205 or (928) 634-5402. Visit our website at http://www.servicemasterofprescott.com/

Tips to help prevent water damage before it starts - ServiceMaster of Prescott

water damage cleanup in prescott by ServiceMaster of Prescott
At ServiceMaster of Prescott, we know that flooding is not common in Prescott, however, water damage from the roof is very common, thanks to the big storms that hit the area in the summer. In fact, In the United States, water damage is the second most frequent reason for an insurance claim. These claims account for a astounding $11 billion of insurance claims every year! Here is some practical information on how to prevent and take care of water damage before it even starts.

There are certain parts of a home you should inspect thoroughly.  Roofs should be checked for water damage on a regular basis as this is the most common area for leaks. Drainage systems should also be check regularly to avoid clogging from happening. Patios, parking decks, vertical concrete surfaces should all be inspected as well. Any part of the building that is underground is just as important. The most venerable areas are places that are both exposed to the elements, or are damaged, as well as any place that sees a lot of wear and tear, such as a parking lot.

Where is water damage most common?

When you have discovered areas that could be compromised by water damage, it is time to look for the potential causes of water damage. Joints that have been installed incorrectly can leak water. All drainage systems need to be cleaned on a regular basis. When it comes to concrete cracks and fissures can only get worse when water is added to them. Check the sealant around the windows as that is the most common area for a window to be compromised by water damage.

How to waterproof trouble areas before water damage occurs.

As mentioned, gutters and other drainage places need to be cleaned on a regular basis. For concrete areas you can apply a sealant onto the trouble spot, however this will not work well on areas with large cracks. Silicon sealants can be used on joints between bricks and windows. For places underground, effective drainage that moves the water away from the home is required. You can also waterproof the structure by applying a special membrane to the wall/concrete surface.

If you're affected by water damage, our trained experts at ServiceMaster of Prescott can restore your home from the damage. Contact us at 928-445-9205 or visit us at: http://www.servicemasterofprescott.com/

What is Mold? How Dangerous is it? How do You Remove it? ServiceMaster of Prescott

mold removal in Prescott by ServiceMaster of Prescott
At ServiceMaster of Prescott, we would like to provide some information on the danger of molds, mold removal, and what you can do to protect your family. Molds are fungi that live both outdoors and indoors. Indoor molds vary and include varieties such as aspergillus, alternaria, cladosporium, penicillium and Stachybotrys chartarum. With the exception of Stachybotrys chartarum (also known as “black mold”), indoor molds can range in color from white to white-green, gray-green, green and shades of brown. All indoor molds, including both white and black molds, do present a health risk and should be removed from the home.

What is White Mold?

White mold shouldn’t be confused with efflorescence. Efflorescence, a crystalline growth, has a white, almost fluffy appearance and often is mistaken for white mold. It typically grows on brick, concrete and stucco and is caused by salt deposits. Efflorescence does not pose the same health threats as mold. It usually takes a mold specialist to determine the difference between efflorescence and white mold.

White Mold vs Black Mold

White mold sometimes is considered mildew, although mildew typically is powdery and actually is an early stage of mold.  Black mold or Stachybotrys chartarum often is referred to as toxic mold; however, not all mold that is black in color is Stachybotrys chartarum.

Anyone with a mold allergy may suffer common allergy symptoms such as sinusitis, itchy eyes, headache and fever when exposed to indoor molds. For some individuals, the allergic reaction caused by mold exposure is more severe. The Mayo Clinic states the following conditions may develop in certain people after mold exposure:

Mold-induced asthma (specifically anyone already suffering from asthma or severe allergies)
Allergic fungal sinusitis
Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (danger for those with asthma or cystic fibrosis)
Hypersensitivity pneumonitis

Mold Remediation

All molds, including both white mold and black mold should be considered a potential health risk and removed from the home. A team of professionals like the mold experts at ServiceMaster of Prescott can assess the situation, identify the mold, its origins and customize a comprehensive plan to remove the mold. Mold requires moisture to grow, so any type of water damage can lead to a mold growth problem. If the water damage is ignored, the mold will continue to grow and spread. It can damage your belongings, destroy drywall and insulation and even make its way into the HVAC duct work.

If your home has suffered a flood, roof leak or other water damage, don’t hesitate to call ServiceMaster of Prescott for full mold remediation. Contact us at(928)445-9205 or visit our website at http://www.servicemasterofprescott.com/

Why is cleaning your carpet important? Tips on caring for your carpet.

carpet cleaning in prescott by ServiceMaster of PrescottWhy is cleaning your carpet important? No other part of your home gets more use than your carpet, and no other part can impact the appearance, mood, even the healthfulness of your home. That's why regular maintenance of your carpet is vital. Here are some handy tips from ServiceMaster of Prescott to help give your carpet a longer life. Before you begin any carpet cleaning project. First is preparation, you will want to remove any furniture out of the room where the carpet is being cleaned. There are many cleaning methods including; a dry and wet extraction method. Keep in mind that you will need to either rent or buy a professional model vacuum, as a residential model will not have the power to clean the carpet as efficiently. Some places you could rent a machine are rental centers and some grocery stores. Two cleaning methods. One of the most popular cleaning solutions is a steam cleaner and are based on the water extraction method. Steam cleaners work by injecting a cleaning solution into the carpet and then sucking it back into the machine. It is important to note that when using a steam cleaner, do not get the carpet too wet. Over saturation can damage the carpet backing and leave it discolored with a bad odor. Another method of cleaning is dry extraction, however the machine and chemicals are far more expensive. Save the hassle and hire a pro in the local area! Carpets should be professionally cleaned every six months to a year. A professional cleaning service has the equipment and expertise to fully remove dirt and detergent, and will remove most of the moisture in your carpet. Consumers using rented equipment often leave the carpet too wet, causing mold and fungal buildup, or they do not fully remove the detergent. Consider hiring the professionals at ServiceMaster of Prescott! They have the most powerful equipment and qualified experience in removing stains. Don't ruin your couch... The type of fabric matters how you clean it!

ServiceMaster of Prescott provides upholstery cleaning, Specialty Cleaning, and other professional furniture cleaning for both wet or dry cleaning fabrics
Many sofas made today are made of microfiber textiles or leather, and require different forms of treatment. Microfiber sofas tend to gather more dirt and this dirt can makes its way deep into the fabric.  Leather furniture doesn’t usually have this problem, however, it can become sticky, rough, or discolored if it is not regularly taken cared for.

When cleaning your furniture it is important to care for it the right way. ServiceMaster of Prescott offers professional upholstery cleaning to help keep it looking newer longer! Here are some suggestions in case you decide to try it yourself...

What are the basics to cleaning a couch?

When working on a microfiber sofas, the most common way of treatment is to locate the soiled areas and remove the dry dirt and debris first. If the soil is deep into the surface of the fibers a cleaning solution must be place onto the area and allowed to absorb and then removed using a steam applicator or another type of special vacuum. Keep in mind microfiber sofas are commonly made from polyester, and should not be drenched water for a long time, as this can leave permanent marks.

As with microfiber sofas, dry soil and debris should also be removed from leather sofas before beginning any treatment. Thankfully with leather sofas only surface treatment is usually required. This is done with a combination of soft detergents and oils made for restoring leather. Keeping leather moisturized is key to giving the sofa a longer life.

Should I have a professional handle the job?

Treating a sofa is a meticulous job that requires good body strength and a bit of patience. If done poorly it can do more harm than good. An amateur can cause damage by using too much water, using the wrong chemicals or detergents, or failing to remove all of the mess. It is very difficult to remove stains or deep soil without a professional vacuum and formulated solutions that a professional cleaner makes and uses. It is particularly important to have a professional clean your leather furniture as the smallest mistake will often result permanent scaring.

Certified professionals are trained to remove dry and penetrated soil from your upholstery. With powerful vacuums, safe cleaning solutions, and well-designed wet applicators, the professionals at ServiceMaster of Prescott will have no problem with restoring your upholstery.

Just as important is how the furniture dries after treatment. It is often the case for armatures to leave too much water behind after treating the sofa, and this can facilitate mold growth. Health effects associated with exposure to indoor damp spaces and mold

mold remediation and mold removal by ServiceMaster of Prescott
Molds and other fungi grow easily in damp indoor environments. People who spend time in such environments sometimes complain of respiratory effects, headaches, and other physical symptoms. In addition to visible or hidden mold, damp spaces likely harbor mold break-down products, dust mites, bacteria, and chemicals, gasses, and particulate matter released from the materials on which molds are growing. Given the difficulties in testing for all of these elements, hard evidence of precise cause-and-effect can be elusive.

Exposure to mold can increase issues with allergies, asthma, and infections...

Mold is no laughing matter and can go unnoticed for long periods. If left unchecked, mold can cause some other more serious health issues.

One recent medical diagnosis is "Toxic Mold Syndrome". This term is a legal construct, rather than a medical diagnosis, involving unidentified disease processes, a constellation of disparate symptoms, and reports of illness uncorroborated by a physical examination of the patients or a professional examination of their surroundings. Although "black mold" or "toxic mold" has been identified as a cause of human illness it is unknown if these molds are the cause of these diverse symptoms.

Another term is "Sick Building Syndrome". The Environmental Protection Agency defines "sick building syndrome" as "situations in which building occupants experience acute health and comfort effects that appear to be linked to time spent in a building, but no specific illness or cause can be identified". Those effects might include headache, fatigue, and irritation of skin, eyes, or throat, among others.

Most often, the symptoms above are linked to indoor air quality problems when a building is insufficiently ventilated or maintained. However it is possible for mold to be an indoor air contaminant.

It is best to hire a professional to examine and treat the space if needed...

The Professionals at ServiceMaster of Prescott can help you to address your mold issues. We will locate and remove mold and offer suggestions to keep it from coming back!

Why Does My Fireplace Smoke Into My Home Occasionally?

smoke damage restoration in prescott, cottonwood, and sedona by ServiceMaster of PrescottIt has been a cold winter here in Northern Arizona this year. During the colder evenings, lighting a fire sounds like such a great idea!

You get everything ready and light the fire however, you were expecting that the smoke to go up the chimney and not come pouring into the family room. Ugh. Suddenly you’re wondering if this back puffing is caused by a serious problem...

ServiceMaster of Prescott has some possible answers to your back puffing problem. However, we must say that every situation is different and the safest way to diagnose the problem is to call a Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) certified chimney sweep to do a full inspection! A certified professional will provide you the most cost-effective and most efficient solutions to the problem.

My Fireplace Smokes When I Try to Light It.

If your fireplace smokes when it is first lit, it could be because the flue is cold. Before you light your fire in a cold fireplace, try warming up the chimney’s flue. Simply roll up a piece of newspaper and light it like a torch and reach it up into your fireplace as far as your arm will go, take your arm away and light the fire. This will draw the smoke to the pre-warmed flue rather than into your home. It’s a simple inexpensive solution and hopefully that solves your problem.

Lighting My Fireplace on a Windy Day Seems to Cause Smoke to Come into the House.

Most likely this is a downdraft problem, meaning the outdoor high winds are causing a draft down your chimney due to an oversized flue, a too-short chimney or lack of chimney cap. The good news is that there are solutions that a certified chimney sweep can put into place for this problem. Your chimney sweep might recommend replacing your chimney cap, adding a flue stretcher or an exhaust fan.

Sometimes My Fireplace Just Starts Smoking With No Rhyme or Reason.

Newer houses are more energy efficient and therefore sealed tighter than older ones. Sometimes changes in air pressure in your home can cause a negative pressure that will change the fireplace airflow. This could be caused by kitchen exhaust fans, opening or closing of doors and windows or simply placement of the home on a hill. Your chimney sweep might recommend a makeup air kit to equalize the air pressure in your home.

No Matter What I Try, I Always Get a Smoke in the House When I Light the Fireplace.

In an effort to be safe, stop lighting fires until you bring in a professional chimney sweep to assess and inspect your chimney. We don’t want your home and your family to be in danger and if the fireplace is constantly sending smoke into your home, you could be causing more harm than you think.

In addition to the reasons listed above, there are a number of reasons that your fireplace might be sending smoke into your home:

  • Tight Home Construction
  • Leaky, Broken or Poorly Constructed Chimney
  • Crooked Pipe Layout
  • Blocked Passage
  • Air pressure
  • Overdry firewood
  • Seasonal Changes

The good news is that this is all fixable! Back puffing happens often and can be remedied.

Now what about the smoke left in your home?

What a mess! ServiceMaster of Prescott can help. We can come in and clean up the smoke damage in Prescott, Cottonwood and Sedona. We are experts in smoke damage restoration and get things cleaned up fast.
